DDAVP Information

DDAVP (Desmopressin) treats central diabetes insipidus. Central diabetes insipidus (CDI) is a rare and treatable condition in which the body doesn't have enough antidiuretic hormone (ADH), or the ADH isn't working correctly, leading to extreme water loss through urine. Most cases of CDI are due to damage to the hypothalamus or pituitary gland. Damage to the hypothalamus or pituitary gland, which causes CDI, can result from various factors, including tumors, brain injuries, infections, inflammation, genetic conditions, and specific medical treatments like surgery or radiation. DDAVP is also used to treat nocturnal enuresis, which is the night-time loss of bladder control. The drug can also help prevent bleeding in people with certain bleeding disorders like Hemophilia A or von Willebrand's disease.

DDAVP Side Effects

The most common side effects of DDAVP may include headache, nausea, abdominal pain, and nasal congestion (for nasal formulations). Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Hyponatremia (low sodium levels);
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, breathing difficulties, itching or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat

DDAVP Precautions

Do not use DDAVP if you are allergic to Desmopressin or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have fluid restriction recommendations, heart failure, high blood pressure, kidney problems, cystic fibrosis, a history of seizures, think you may be pregnant or plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between DDAVP and other medications, such as carbamazepine, chlorpromazine, lamotrigine, oxybutynin, vasopressin, aspirin, narcotic pain medicine, antidepressants, medicine to treat erectile dysfunction, drugs to treat high blood pressure or a prostate disorder, or beta-blockers. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant before using DDAVP. Desmopressin may be used in pregnancy to manage bleeding disorders and diabetes insipidus. The drug is expected to be safe for both mother and child. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed before using DDAVP. Desmopressin from a nasal spray is excreted in negligible amounts into milk but is not expected to harm a nursing infant. DDAVP can be used in children. However, follow all dosage and precautions carefully and administer this medicine under a doctor's supervision. While DDAVP is not a cure for bed-welting, it helps treat symptoms of bedwetting while a child is on the drug.

Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. DDAVP comes as an oral tablet, a sublingual tablet, and a nasal spray. DDAVP oral tablets are taken by mouth. Swallow the oral tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or break the oral tablet. You can take this medicine with or without food. Place the DDAVP sublingual tablet under your tongue. Do not chew, crush, or swallow it whole. The medicine is designed to be absorbed through the lining of your mouth. Apply DDAVP spray in the nose only. Prime the spray the first time you use it. This involves pressing the pump a few times until a fine spray is produced. Gently blow your nose before using the spray to clear your nostrils. Use the spray as your doctor directs. Hold your breath for a few seconds after spraying. Take this medicine at regular intervals as prescribed by your doctor. DDAVP dosage will vary based on the condition you're treating. Sometimes, your doctor may limit the amount of fluid you take. It is crucial to follow all instructions provided by your doctor regarding fluid intake while using DDAVP. Store DDAVP at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
