Movantik (Naloxegol Oxalate) is a medication used to treat constipation caused by opioid pain medication. Opioids slow down movement in your digestive system, leading to pain and discomfort caused by constipation. Movantik is a selective opioid receptor antagonist that works by blocking the mu-opioid receptors in tissues in your gastrointestinal tract and bowel. It stops the mu-opioid receptors from receiving the opioids, which reduces the constipation. You should not use Movantik if you have a blockage in your stomach or intestines. To make sure Movantik is right for you, tell your doctor if you have a stomach or intestinal disorder (such as Crohn’s disease, diverticulitis, or Ogilvie’s syndrome), stomach cancer, colorectal cancer, a perforation in your esophagus, stomach, or intestines, liver disease, or kidney disease. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using Movantik, as the baby could have opioid withdrawal symptoms. Do not breastfeed while taking Movantik. Take this medication as directed. While using Movantik, do not use any other laxatives that your doctor has not prescribed. Avoid grapefruit products while using Movantik, as it can interact and lead to unwanted side effects. Movantik is not approved for use by anyone under the age of 18.
Common side effects of using Movantik include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, gas, or headaches. Call your doctor immediately if you experience severe stomach pain that will not go away, severe diarrhea, or symptoms of narcotic medicine withdrawal. Symptoms of narcotic medicine withdrawal include anxiety, feeling irritable, sweating, chills, excessive yawning, stomach pain, and severe diarrhea. If you experience any serious side effects of signs of an allergic reaction, seek emergency medical attention.
