Rowasa (mesalamine) is a medication used to treat ulcerative colitis, proctitis, and proctosigmoiditis, as well as other diseases of the colon and inflammatory diseases. For the treatment of these conditions, Rowasa targets the prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are produced by the enzymes, cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase. These enzymes are over-active in individuals with inflammatory bowel diseases. Rowasa works by blocking the activity of cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase, reducing the production of prostaglandins. Reduced production of prostaglandins decreases inflammation in the colon and the symptoms associated with several conditions. You should not use Rowasa if you are allergic to mesalamine, aspirin, sulfasalazine, or salicylates. As well, tell your doctor if you have ever had a blockage in your stomach or intestines, a skin condition such as eczema or dermatitis, asthma, liver disease, or kidney disease. It is not known whether Rowasa will harm an unborn baby, or if it will pass through breastmilk. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding. Take this medication as directed. Do not use Rowasa Enemas or Rowasa Suppositories orally. Common side effects of Rowasa include stomach pain, nausea, or gas, fever, cold, or flu symptoms, rash, itching, or drowsiness. Call your doctor immediately if you experience severe stomach pain, cramping, or bloody diarrhea. If you experience any serious side effects or signs of an allergic reaction, seek emergency medical attention. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about any other side effects, and how to deal with them if they persist.
