Tasmar (Generic name: Tolcapone) is an adjunct therapy to levodopa and carbidopa (Sinemet) for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. Tolcapone provides long-term relief of symptoms including muscle stiffness, tremor, and weakness caused by Parkinson’s disease. However, Tasmar does not cure the underlying disease. Tasmar is prescribed only when other Parkinson’s drugs failed to control the symptoms.
The most common Tasmar side effects are abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, nausea, sleepiness, tiredness, vomiting, and etc. If you are experiencing any severe side effects such as, back pain, easy bruising, fast heartbeat, low blood pressure, mental/mood changes, muscle stiffness, urination problem, and symptoms of an allergic reaction (e.g., difficult breathing; hives; itching; rash; swelling), please inform your doctor immediately. Tasmar is known to cause severe liver problems and should be discontinued if any early signs of liver damage.
Do NOT take Tasmar oral if you are allergic to Tolcapone or to any of the ingredients in Tasmar medication. Before taking Tasmar, tell your doctor if you have had any medical conditions, including: alcoholism, certain muscle problem (rhabomyolysis), kidney problems, liver disease, and etc. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications you use. They may interact with Tasmar drug, especially of: antihistamines, anti-seizure drugs, MAO inhibitors, muscle relaxants, narcotic pain relievers, psychiatric medicines, sedatives, sleep medicines, tranquilizers. Be alert for any sign of liver problems and do a blood test to check your liver function before you start Tasmar therapy.
