Zavesca (miglustat) is a medication used to treat type 1 Gaucher disease. Zavesca may improve the condition of the liver, spleen, bones, and blood cells in patients, but is not a cure for type 1 Gaucher disease. Zavesca works by inhibiting glucosylceramide in the body’s immune system, an enzyme that is overproduced in patients with type 1 Gaucher disease. Glucosylceramide creates a deficiency in other proteins needed for your organs to function, so by blocking it, function and health can improve. To make sure Zavesca is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have stomach problems, an intestinal disorder, kidney disease, or a condition that causes tremors. Tell your doctor about any other medications you are taking in order to reduce the risk of interaction. It is unknown if Zavesca will harm an unborn baby, or transfer into breastmilk.
