Advocate Information
Advocate (Imidacloprid/Moxidectin) is used to prevent, treat, and control parasitic infections in pets. Parasitic infections include heartworm disease, hookworms, roundworms, fleas, whipworms, and sarcoptic mange. Advocate is used in cats, dogs, and ferrets. The drug is also used to treat flea allergy dermatitis, ear mite infestations, lice infestations, and skin diseases caused by demodicosis and sarcoptic mange. Insecticides like Imidacloprid and Moxidectin interfere with the parasites’ nervous system, causing paralysis and death.
Advocate Side Effects
The most common side effects of Advocate may include temporary itchiness, skin redness, and greasy fur. Call your veterinarian right away if your dog has any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Abnormal breathing;
• Excessive salivation from licking the application site;
• Lack of muscular coordination
Advocate Precautions
Do not administer Advocate if your pet is allergic to Imidacloprid, Moxidectin, or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start administering this medication, tell your doctor about your pet’s medical history, including if it is underweight and less than 7 weeks old. Tell your doctor about all your pet’s medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Advocate and other medications. Do not administer Advocate if your pet is pregnant or planning to become pregnant without informing your doctor. It is unknown if the drug will harm your pregnant pet. Do not use Advocate in lactating pets without talking to your veterinarian. It is unknown if Imidacloprid and Moxidectin pass into breast milk.
Administer this medicine exactly as prescribed by your veterinarian. Advocate comes in different sizes and strengths. Use cat products only for cats and dog products for dogs. Do not use Imidacloprid/Moxidectin on any other animal species. Apply Advocate for dogs between the shoulder blades at the bottom of the dog’s head. For large dogs, apply the product in 3 to 4 spots along the dog’s back while it is standing. Wash your hands before and after applying Advocate. Avoid skin contact with the Advocate content. Do not stroke or groom animals till the application site is dry. Do not smoke, eat, or drink while administering Imidacloprid/Moxidectin. If there is accidental exposure to Advocate, rinse your eyes with water and wash your skin with soap and water. The solvent in this drug may stain finished surfaces, fabrics, leather, and plastic. Avoid contact between Advocate and such surfaces. If you miss a dose, contact your veterinarian for heartworm testing before applying the next dose. Store Advocate at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
