Alinia Information
Alinia (generic: Nitazoxanide, also known as Nizonide DT) is an antiprotozoal medication. In other words, it destroys protozoa – single celled organisms – and prevents their reproduction. Most often, Alinia is used in the treatment of diarrhea caused infection by either Giardia lamblia or Cryptosporidium parvum. Cryptosporidium is a parasite found throughout the world particularly in water is that drinking water or recreational water such as swimming pools: it is resistant to chlorine based bleaches and so may persist in the environment even after standard disinfecting procedures have been carried out. It lives and multiplies in the intestines of humans and animals alike. Alinia should always be taken exactly as your doctor instructs.
Alinia Side Effects
The most commonly cited side effects of Alinia are nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, stomach pain or cramps and headache. These side effects can be reduced by taking Alinia with or shortly after food. A Rash or hives may indicate an allergic reaction and you should seek medical advice. A severe and sudden allergic reaction and can occur when taking Alinia or any other medicine. If you experience sudden swelling of the mouth, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty in swallowing or breathing seek medical attention urgently.
Alinia Precautions
Caution should be exercised when prescribing Alinia to persons with kidney, pancreas or liver dysfunction as there have yet to be widespread studies on Alinia's effects in these populations. Administering Alinia to patients with combined kidney and liver dysfunctions should be avoided. Pregnant or breast feeding women should only take Alinia if told to do so by their doctor. Children of eleven years or younger should take the liquid suspension formulation of Alinia rather than tablets.
