Asmanex Information

Asmanex (Mometasone Furoate) is used to control and prevent asthma symptoms such as wheezing and shortness of breath. This drug is only for the prevention of asthma attacks. It does not stop an asthma attack that has already begun. Corticosteroids like Mometasone Furoate work by reducing the irritation and swelling of the airways to prevent asthma attacks.

Asmanex Side Effects

The most common side effects of Asmanex may include coughing, dry throat, headache, hoarseness, and upset stomach. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Blurred vision;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, breathing difficulties, itching or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat;
• Signs of infection, such as feeling tired, body aches, pain, and chills;
• Worsening asthma symptoms

Asmanex Precautions

Do not use Asmanex if you are allergic to Mometasone Furoate or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have any infection, including tuberculosis, glaucoma, herpes infection of the eyes, liver disease, osteoporosis, think you may be pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Asmanex and other medications, such as nefazodone, clarithromycin, ketoconazole, atazanavir, etc. Do not use Asmanex if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant without informing your doctor. It is not known whether mometasone will harm an unborn baby. However, having untreated or uncontrolled asthma during pregnancy may cause complications such as low birth weight, premature birth, or eclampsia (dangerously high blood pressure that can lead to medical problems in both mother and baby). Do not use Asmanex while breastfeeding without talking to your doctor. Mometasone Furoate passes into breast milk in trace amounts but is unlikely to harm a nursing infant. Do not give this drug to children below 5 years without talking to your doctor.

Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Asmanex comes in powder form and is preloaded in a special inhaler (twisthaler). The device will deliver a measured dose of mometasone as a fine powder spray each time you use the inhaler. You may or may not be able to feel or taste this powder in your mouth while using the inhaler. Please do not wash your inhaler device or allow it to get wet. Wipe the mouthpiece with a clean, dry tissue or cloth after use. Do not use extra doses if you do not feel or taste the powder. Keep using the medicine as directed. It may take up to 2 weeks for your symptoms to improve. Asmanex may increase your risk of getting an infection. To help prevent thrush (a yeast infection in the mouth or throat), rinse your mouth with water without swallowing after using your inhaler. Avoid being near people who are sick or have infections. Call your doctor for preventive treatment if you are exposed to chickenpox or measles. Store Asmanex at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. When you first open the foil pouch and remove the inhaler device, write the date on the device. Throw away the inhaler when the dose counter shows "00." Keep the inhalation aerosol canister away from open flame or high heat. The canister may explode if it gets too hot.
