Aventyl Information
Aventyl (Nortriptyline) is used to treat depression. Depression is a mental health condition that causes a low mood and loss of interest in activities for a prolonged period. Tricyclic antidepressants like Nortriptyline increase the amount of natural chemicals called norepinephrine and serotonin in the brain, improving your mood.
Aventyl Side Effects
Aventyl's most common side effects may include constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, headache, stomach cramps, and increased sweating. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Chest pain;
• Fast or abnormal heartbeat;
• Hallucinations;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, breathing difficulties, itching or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat;
• Signs of low blood pressure, such as dizziness, confusion, sudden weight gain, dry mouth, headaches
Aventyl Precautions
Do not use Aventyl if you are allergic to Nortriptyline or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have had a recent heart attack, seizures, Brugada syndrome, diabetes, think you may be pregnant, plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Aventyl and other medications, such as Linezolid, methylene blue, phenelzine, sumatriptan, codeine, buspirone, St. John's wort, quinidine, levothyroxine, etc. Do not use Aventyl if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant without informing your doctor. The drug may harm an unborn baby. Discuss the benefits and risks of using this drug in pregnancy with your doctor. Do not use Aventyl while breastfeeding without talking to your doctor. Nortriptyline passes into breast milk in small amounts and may harm a nursing infant. Do not give this drug to children without talking to your doctor. Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Aventyl comes as a capsule. Do not break or chew the medicine.
Keep taking this medicine as your doctor directs, even if you feel well. Stopping this drug suddenly can increase your risk of side effects. If you need to stop using this medicine, your doctor will gradually reduce your dose. Avoid drinking alcohol when taking Aventyl. Alcohol can affect your alertness or concentration. Avoid driving or carrying out tasks that require you to be alert until you know how the medicine affects you. Rise slowly if you have been sitting or lying down to reduce your chances of dizziness. Aventyl can make you sunburn easily. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors. You may become dehydrated when using this medicine. Be careful in hot weather or while being active. Drink lots of fluids to stop fluid loss. Store Aventyl at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
