Cafergot Information

Cafergot (Ergotamine/Caffeine) is used to treat migraine headaches with or without aura. Migraines can sometimes be caused by widened blood vessels in the head. Ergot alkaloids like Ergotamine work by constricting blood vessel walls in the head, relieving dilation that causes the pain of migraine headaches. Caffeine helps the ergotamine to be absorbed into the bloodstream more effectively.

Cafergot Side Effects

The most common side effects of Cafergot may include dizziness, diarrhea, stomach pain, dull headaches, and nausea. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Chest pain;
• Difficulty urinating;
• Pain in the lower back or side;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, breathing difficulties, itching or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat

Cafergot Precautions

Do not use Cafergot if you are allergic to Ergotamine, Caffeine, or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have heart problems, poor blood circulation, serious infection, severe liver or kidney disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, think you may be pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Cafergot and other medications, such as mexiletine, fluvoxamine, phenylephrine, ritonavir, clarithromycin, oral contraceptives, etc. Do not use Cafergot if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant without informing your doctor. This drug can affect the growth of an unborn baby. Do not use Cafergot while breastfeeding without talking to your doctor. Ergotamine and Caffeine may pass into breast milk and harm a nursing infant. Do not give this drug to children below 6 years without talking to your doctor.

Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Cafergot comes in tablet form. Swallow two tablets at the first sign of a migraine attack. This dose is usually enough to stop an attack. However, if the migraine doesn’t go away, take another dose every half hour to a maximum of 6 tablets in one day. Do not use more than six tablets in one day. Do not take more than ten tablets in one week. For use in children, swallow one tablet at the first sign of a migraine attack. This dose is usually enough to stop an attack. However, if the migraine doesn’t go away, take another dose every half hour to a maximum of 3 tablets in one day. Do not use more than three tablets in one day in children. Do not administer more than five tablets in one week to children. Taking too much Cafergot may increase the risk of side effects. Cafergot will only treat a migraine attack once it has started. The drug is not for preventing the migraine. Avoid drinking grapefruit juice when using this drug. Grapefruit may interfere with the action of Cafergot in your body. This drug can cause dizziness. Do not drive or perform any activity that requires alertness until you know how Cafergot affects you. Inform your doctor if you smoke. Nicotine in cigarettes may cause unwanted side effects when using Cafergot. Store Cafergot at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
