Carnitor Information
Carnitor (Levocarnitine) is a diet supplement used to treat and prevent low blood levels of carnitine. Carnitine is made in the body from meat and dairy products. Levocarnitine belongs to the class of medications called as amino acid derivative. This medication works by helping the body use long-chain fatty acids for energy and to keep you in good health. Some people on dialysis and people being treated with certain drugs may not be able to properly use Carnitine from their diets and therefore have low blood levels of carnitine. Lower levels of Carnitine can cause liver, heart and muscle problems. Carnitor is best taken with or right after meals to lessen the risk of an upset stomach.
Carnitor Side Effects
The common side effects of Carnitor may include abdominal cramps, body odor, diarrhea, headache, muscle pain or weakness, nausea, swelling of hands, lower legs or feet, tingling skin, upset stomach.
Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as a seizure.
Carnitor Precautions
Do not take Carnitor if you are allergic to Levocarnitine or if you have any other allergies. Inform your doctor or pharmacist about your medical history especially of kidney disease and seizires before you start taking this medication. The liquid preparations of this medication may contain sugar or alcohol. Be careful if you have diabetes, alcohol dependence or liver disease. Carnitor should not be used during pregnancy unless it is clearly needed. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breast-feeding.
