Compazine Information

Compazine (Prochlorperazine) is a prescription used for the treatment of severe nausea, vomiting, vertigo, Meniere's disease, motion sickness, and migraines. It is also used to improve mood, thoughts, and behaviors in people with schizophrenia and anxiety disorders. The active substance in Compazine is Prochlorperazine. Antiemetics (antipsychotics) such as Prochlorperazine antagonize dopamine-mediated neurotransmission at synapses and may block postsynaptic dopamine receptors. The antiemetic effect of the drug is due to its direct action on the chemoreceptor-activating region of the marrow by blocking dopamine receptors. Avoid using Compazine to treat behavioral problems in older adult patients with dementia. You should start to feel the effect of Prochlorperazine around 30 to 60 minutes after taking it.

Compazine Side Effects

The most common side effects of Compazine may include dry mouth, extreme sleepiness, falls, headache, blocked nose, and uncontrolled muscle movements.

Call your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• A fast or irregular heartbeat (your heart feels like it's pounding);
• Difficulty with breathing;
• Erectile dysfunction or loss of libido;
• Muscle stiffness or shaking, or uncontrollable face or tongue movements;
• Worsening of symptoms

Compazine Precautions

Prochlorperazine is a tablet taken by mouth, typically 3 to 4 times daily. Follow your prescription label carefully. You should feel better 30-60 minutes after taking Compazine medicine. Do not use Compazine in an elderly patient with dementia, as this may worsen their condition. This medication may make you feel sleepy or tired. Do not engage in activities requiring mental alert, such as driving or operating machines. Discuss with your doctor if you want to stop taking Prochlorperazine. Don't suddenly stop this medication, especially if you have been on it for a long time. Discuss with your doctor before stopping this medication to prevent withdrawal symptoms. Before you start using Prochlorperazine, tell your doctor about your medical history; if you have a parkinson's disease, dementia, liver failure, glaucoma, prostatic hypertrophy, peptic ulcer disease, history of the neuroleptic malignant syndrome, and chronic kidney disease. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or plan to become pregnant. During pregnancy, Prochlorperazine should be used only when needed. Babies born to mothers who used this medication in their third trimester may develop symptoms including muscle stiffness or shakiness, drowsiness, feeding difficulties, or constant crying. Tell the doctor immediately if you notice any of these symptoms in your newborn anytime during their first month. Prochlorperazine may be excreted in breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Compazine and other medications such as sotalol, ibutilide, pentamidine, procainamide, quinidine, and indapamide.
