Dantrium Information

Dantrium (Dantrolene Sodium) is a prescription medication used to treat muscle tightness and cramping caused by certain nerve disorders such as spinal cord injury, stroke, cerebral palsy, and multiple sclerosis. Nerve disorders may affect the brain and spinal cord, causing numbness, pain, tingling, unexplained weakness, and loss of muscle strength. The active ingredient in Dantrium is Dantrolene Sodium. Skeletal muscle relaxants such as Dantrolene sodium work by relaxing the muscles, helping to reduce muscle pain and stiffness, and improving your ability to move around.

Dantrium Precautions

Before using Dantrium, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or have any other allergies. Dantrium is a capsule. Take Dantrium exactly as your doctor prescribes. Take the capsules whole with enough water. Do not crush, chew, or open the capsules. Take one 25mg capsule daily at the beginning of your treatment. Your doctor will slowly adjust the number of capsules you take until the optimal dose for your treatment is reached. Children's doses will be based on body weight. Your doctor will administer the injectable form of this medicine. Dantrium may cause severe liver problems. Your doctor may request frequent liver tests while using the drug to reduce your risk of this side effect. This drug may increase your skin's sensitivity to sunlight. Protect yourself by using sunscreen of at least SPF 30 and wearing protective clothing outdoors. Limit your alcoholic beverages while using Dantrium. Alcohol may increase your risk of side effects. Avoid driving or using machinery when using this drug. This medicine can cause dizziness and drowsiness. If you experience severe side effects and want to stop the medication, please talk to your doctor first. Discuss with your doctor if there is no improvement in your condition after 2 months of regular use of Dantrium. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history if you have a heart, liver, lung (such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease-COPD), or kidney disease. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or plan to become pregnant. Dantrolene Sodium passes into breast milk and may harm a nursing infant. Avoid using Dantrium for children less than 5 years old. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Dantrium and other medications such as estrogens, metoclopramide, codeine, lorazepam, and cetirizine.
