Depo Provera Injection (Medoxyprogesterone Acetate) is used as a contraceptive to prevent pregnancy. Progestins like Medoxyprogesterone Acetate work by preventing ovulation (the release of an egg from an ovary). The drug also causes some changes in your cervical mucus and uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to reach the uterus or for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.

Depo Provera Injection Precautions
Do not receive Depo Provera Injection if you are allergic to Medoxyprogesterone Acetate or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have a history of stroke or blood clot, asthma, breast cancer, breast lump, depression, diabetes, high blood pressure, light or irregular menstrual periods, liver disease, migraines, seizures, unexplained vaginal bleeding, think you may be pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Depo Provera Injection and other medications, such as metformin, topiramate, St. John’s wort, modafinil, bosentan, mitotane, ritonavir, etc. Do not receive Depo Provera Injection if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant without informing your doctor. Medoxyprogesterone Acetate is used to prevent pregnancy. Receiving this medication when pregnant can harm a fetus. Do not receive Depo Provera Injection while breastfeeding without talking to your doctor. Medoxyprogesterone Acetate may pass into breastmilk and harm your nursing infant. Do not give this drug to children who are not menstruating without talking to your doctor.
Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Your doctor will inject Depo Provera Injection into your muscle once every three months (13 weeks). You may have breakthrough bleeding when using this medicine. Inform your doctor if the bleeding continues or is very heavy. You should not use Depo Provera Injection for longer than two years unless other birth control methods are not right for you. If you use this medicine long-term, your doctor will need to check your bone density during treatment. Medroxyprogesterone can decrease the calcium stored in your bones, which may cause bone loss (osteoporosis) when the medicine is used over long periods. Bone loss may not be reversible. Do not miss your scheduled dose. This drug will not effectively prevent pregnancy if you do not receive an injection every three months. If you plan to continue using Depo Provera Injection, get the missed injection as soon as possible. Use a non-hormonal backup birth control (such as a condom or diaphragm with spermicide) until you receive the missed injection. Depo Provera Injection will not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV and AIDS. Using a condom is the only way to protect yourself from these diseases.
