Desyrel (Trazodone) is used to treat major depressive disorder. Depression is a mood disorder that causes feelings of sadness or hopelessness that do not go away. This condition may cause you to lose interest in the things you used to enjoy, interfering with your daily life. Depression may be caused by changes in brain chemicals that affect your mood. Desyrel may help to improve your mood, appetite, and energy level and also decrease anxiety and insomnia related to depression. The active ingredient in Desyrel is Trazodone. Serotonin modulators like Trazodone increase the amount of serotonin, a natural substance in your brain, to maintain mental balance.
Desyrel Side Effects
The most common side effects of Desyrel may include blurred vision, dizziness, diarrhea, weight loss, and tiredness. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Changes in heart rhythm;
• Easy bruising;
• Serotonin syndrome;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, breathing difficulties, or itching or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat;
• Suicidal thoughts
Desyrel Precautions
Do not use Desyrel if you are allergic to Trazodone or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have ever had Kidney or liver disease, Heart disease or a recent heart attack, A blood clotting disorder, Narrow-angle glaucoma, Long QT syndrome, Bipolar disorder, think you may be pregnant or plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Desyrel and other medications, such as linezolid, phenelzine, phenytoin, St. John’s wort, tramadol, warfarin, sumatriptan, etc. Do not use this medicine if you have used an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days. After you stop taking Trazodone, you must wait at least 14 days before you start taking an MAO Inhibitor. Avoid using stimulant medicine, opioid medicine, other antidepressants, medicines for serious infections, and Parkinson’s disease medicines with Desyrel. These drugs can interact with Trazodone and cause serotonin syndrome. Do not use Desyrel if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant without informing your doctor. Taking Trazodone in pregnancy may harm your baby. However, stopping the medicine may not be safe for you. Do not use Desyrel while breastfeeding without talking to your doctor. Trazodone may pass into breast milk, and it may harm nursing infants. Do not give this drug to children below 18 years of age. Trazodone is not approved for use in children.
Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Desyrel is a tablet. Do not crush or chew it. Take this drug after a meal or snack. It may take up to two weeks before your symptoms improve. Keep using this medicine and inform your doctor if your symptoms do not improve. Do not stop using this drug suddenly without informing your doctor. Stopping this drug may cause unpleasant side effects. Do not drink alcohol when using this medicine. Alcohol may increase your risk of side effects. Desyrel may cause dizziness. Avoid driving or any activity that requires alertness until you know how the drug affects you. To reduce your risk of dizziness, avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position. Store this medication at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light. Keep it out of the reach of children.
