Diabeta (Glyburide) is an oral diabetes medication used together with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Glyburide is not for treating type 1 diabetes. Controlling high blood sugar helps prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems. Proper control of diabetes may also lessen your risk of a heart attack or stroke. Glyburide belongs to a class of medications known as sulfonylureas. This medication lowers blood sugar by causing the release of your body's natural insulin. Do not take this medication if you are allergic. Talk to your medical professional if you have a medical history of liver disease, kidney disease, thyroid disease, certain hormonal conditions (adrenal/pituitary insufficiency, syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone-SIADH), electrolyte imbalance (hyponatremia), a certain nervous system problem (autonomic neuropathy). Diabeta may cause symptoms of blurred vision, dizziness, or drowsiness due to extremely low or high blood sugar. Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires alertness or clear vision until you are sure you can perform such activities safely. Take this medication as directed by your doctor. Consult your doctor for any possible side effects and precautions. If you experience any serious side effects, contact your doctor promptly.
