Diamicron Information

Diamicron (Gliclazide) is used to control blood glucose in people with type 2 diabetes. The drug is used when diet, exercise, and weight reduction have not been found to control blood glucose well enough without medication. Oral hypoglycemics like Glicazide work by increasing the amount of insulin released by the pancreas and help the body use insulin more efficiently.

Diamicron Side Effects

The most common side effects of Diamicron may include abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, headache, heartburn, and nausea. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Chest pain;
• Seizures;
• Signs of a severe skin reaction, such as blistering, a rash covering a large area of the body, or a rash that spreads quickly;

Diamicron Precautions

Do not use Diamicron if you are allergic to Gliclazide or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have fungal or bacterial infections, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, intolerance to some sugars, keto-acidosis, kidney disease, liver disease, type 1 diabetes, think you may be pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Diamicron and other medications, such as clarithromycin, captopril, fluconazole, ibuprofen, chlorpromazine, ritodrine, danazol, St. John’s wort, etc. Do not use Diamicron if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant without informing your doctor. Gliclazide can harm an unborn baby. Do not use Diamicron while breastfeeding without talking to your doctor. It is unknown if Gliclazide passes into breast milk or if it may harm a nursing infant. Do not give this drug to children without talking to your doctor.

Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Diamicron comes in tablet form. Swallow the tablet with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew it. Always eat a meal after taking your tablet. Take this drug at the same time each day to help you remember. Avoid taking alcohol when using this drug. Alcohol can increase your risk of low blood sugar. It is important to follow a regular diet when taking Diamicron. Using diabetes medicine is usually for life. Do not stop using this drug without talking to your doctor. Stopping the drug suddenly may cause high blood sugar and increase your risk of developing diabetes-related complications. Store Diamicron at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep all medicines away from children.
