Dilantin Infatabs Information

Dilantin Infatabs (Phenytoin) is used to prevent and control seizures. A seizure is a sudden, uncontrolled burst of electrical activity in the brain that can cause temporary changes in behavior, movement, and levels of consciousness. Anticonvulsants like Phenytoin reduce the spread of seizure activity in the brain. The drug lowers the chances of the brain having seizures by reducing the excessive excitability of neurons that generally cause a seizure.

Dilantin Infatabs Side Effects

The most common side effects of Dilantin Infatabs may include nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, and sleeping difficulties. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:

Do not use Dilantin Infatabs if you are allergic to Phenytoin or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have High blood sugar, Diabetes, Blood conditions like porphyria, Liver disease, Lupus, Folate deficiency, think you may be pregnant or plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. There may be a drug interaction between Dilantin Infatabs and other medications, such as delavirdine, amlodipine, folic acid, warfarin, ibuprofen, clonazepam, omeprazole, phenobarbital, trazodone, antacids, etc. Do not use Dilantin Infatabs if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant without informing your doctor. If used in pregnancy, this drug may cause a life-threatening bleeding problem in newborn babies. However, since untreated seizures may harm both mother and unborn baby, do not stop using this drug unless directed by your doctor. If you are a sexually active woman of child-bearing potential, use non-hormonal birth control to prevent pregnancy when using Phenytoin. Discuss reliable forms of birth control with your doctor. Do not use Dilantin Infatabs while breastfeeding without talking to your doctor. Phenytoin passes into your breastmilk, and it may harm nursing infants.

This drug may be used to prevent seizures in children. However, their dosages will be based on weight. Discuss with your doctor before giving this drug to a child. Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Take this drug by mouth 2 to 3 times a day. The drug is a chewable tablet. Chew it thoroughly before swallowing. You may also swallow the tablet whole. Take this drug with a full glass of water. You can take Dilantin Infatabs with food to reduce the risk of stomach upset. Use this drug regularly to get the most benefit out of it. You can use it at the same time each day to help you remember. Your seizures may become worse if you stop the drug suddenly. Avoid drinking alcohol while using this medicine. Alcohol can increase the side effects of the drug. Dilantin Infatabs may impair your reactions. Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how this medicine will affect you. If you have diabetes, this drug may make it difficult to control your blood sugar. Check your blood sugar regularly and inform your doctor. Store this medication at room temperature in a dry place, away from light. Keep it out of the reach of children.
