Evra patch Information

Evra patch (Norelgestromin/Ethinyl Estradiol) is used to prevent pregnancy. The drug is a patch worn on the skin. It releases medication that is continuously absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream. Evra patch alters the female reproductive cycle. It also causes changes in cervical mucus and the uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to reach the uterus and also making it harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus. Evra Patch is a birth control method. It won’t protect you against sexually transmitted diseases. Progestins like Norelgestromin work by preventing the fertilization of an egg by sperm or the release of an egg from the ovary. Synthetic estrogens like Ethinyl Estradiol work by stopping a woman’s egg from fully developing each month to prevent fertilization. Evra Patch is a birth control method. It won’t protect you against sexually transmitted diseases.

The most common side effects of Evra patch may include breast tenderness; muscle spasms; painful periods; nausea; headache; dizziness; vaginal yeast infections; Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Chest pain spreading to your jaw or shoulder;
• Mood changes;
• Swelling in your hands, arms, ankles or feet;
• Wheezing

Evra patch Precautions

Do not use the Evra Patch if you are allergic to Norelgestromin, Ethinyl Estradiol or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start taking this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have a blood clot in a blood vessel such as your lungs or legs; have unexplained vaginal bleeding; have had a migraine with aura; have had a heart attack; have cancer of the breast, cervix, or vagina; have a blood clotting disorder; have severe diabetes with blood vessel damage; have hepatitis C; are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or plan to become pregnant; are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Evra Patch and other medicines like phenytoin; St. John’s wort; rifampicin; carbamazepine; dasabuvir; Do not use Evra Patch if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant without informing your doctor. This medication may harm your unborn baby. Do not use Evra Patch while breastfeeding without talking to your doctor. Norelgestromin and Ethinyl Estradiol pass into your breastmilk in small amounts and may cause adverse effects on a nursing infant. Do not give this drug to children less than 18 years old. It may harm them. Girls who have not had their first menstrual periods should not use Evra Patch.

Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not stop or change the dose of this medicine without talking to your doctor. Remove the patch from the foil pouch and apply directly to clean, dry skin. Apply the patch to your upper outer arm, abdomen, buttock, or where it will not be rubbed by tight clothing. Do not use the patch on your breasts or irritated skin. Using creams, lotions, or oils on the patch site may make the patch fall off. Change the patch once a week on the same day. Remove the used patch before placing a new one. Apply the patch to a different area with each change to avoid skin irritation. You may start this medicine on the first day of your next period. You will use Evra Patch for 3 weeks and leave it off for one week. Mark your calendar to remind you when to change and leave off your patches. Going longer than 7 days without a patch can increase your risk of pregnancy. Do not stop using this medicine without talking to your doctor. You may get irregular periods, little or no periods, if you suddenly stop Evra Patch. This usually happens in the first 3 months, especially if your periods were not regular before you started the medicine. Evra Patch may cause blotchy and dark areas on your face and skin. Sunlight may worsen this effect. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when you are outdoors. Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children. Store Evra Patch in its original container, away from light and moisture.
