Famotidine Information

Famotidine is a prescription medication that is used to treat patients with ulcers in the stomach and intestines, as well as conditions where the stomach produces too much acid like Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome. This medication also treats gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other diseases where acid backs up from the stomach to the esophagus causing heartburn. Famotidine belong to the class of medication called Histamine-2 antagonists. It works by decreasing the amount of acid the stomach produces.

Famotidine Side Effects

Common Side effects of famotidine include:
• Constipation;
• Diarrhea;
• Dizziness;
• Headache

Contact your physician immediately if any of these adverse effects occur:
• Agitation;
• Confusion;
• Dark colored urine;
• Fast or pounding heartbeats;
• Hallucination;
• Lack of energy;
• Seizure;
• Sudden dizziness (like you might pass out);
• Unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, along with fever;
• Unusual tiredness

Famotidine Precautions

Do not take this medication if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients. Inform your doctor of any other medications that you take including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Famotidine can make it difficult for your body to absorb other medications ingested orally, thus inform your doctor if you are taking:
• Cefditoren;
• Cefditoren;
• Dasatinib;
• Delavirdine;
• Fosamprenavir;
• Tizanidine

Inform your doctor of your medical history especially if you have:
• Cancer stomach;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease;
• Long QT syndrome (your or a member of your family has been diagnosed)

Heartburn is often confused with the first symptoms of a heart attack. Seek emergency medical attention if you have chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the jaw, arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, anxiety, light-headedness and a general ill feeling. It is unknown whether or not famotidine can harm an unborn child, inform your doctor if you are, or become pregnant while on this medication. Famotidine passes in to breast milk, consult your doctor before breast-feeding your child.
