Ferriprox (Deferiprone) Information
Ferriprox (Deferiprone) belongs to the class known as iron chelators. It is a medication that treats a blood disorder where there is too much iron in the body. This disorder is called Thalassemia, it is caused by repeating blood transfusions. Individuals who have blood disorders receive blood transfusions but it can also bring excess amounts of iron in the body, high levels of iron can cause other serious health problems. Deferiprone attaches to iron in the body forming compounds that are removed by the body mainly through urine and in some cases through stool. This medication is taken orally with or without food as advised by your doctor, usually 3 times a day- morning, midday and evening. This medication needs to be taken regularly for it to be effective.
Before using this medication, tell your doctor if you are allergic to it or if you have any other allergies. This medication may contain ingredients that can cause allergic reactions. Inform your doctor if you have a medical history of liver disease or low white blood cell count. Possible side effects include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain or joint pain, if any of these symptoms get worse inform your doctor.
