Glucophage XR (Generic name: Metformin Hydrochloride Extended-Release) is an oral anti-diabetic medication used to control glucose (blood sugar) in patients with type 2 diabetes (non-insulin-dependent). Glucophage XR works longer in your body. Glucophage XR extended-release tablets are a biguanide antidiabetic. It works by helping to restore your body's proper response to the insulin you naturally produce, and by decreasing the amount of sugar that your liver makes and that your stomach/intestines absorb. Take Glucophage XR exactly as it was prescribed for you.
Glucophage XR Side Effects
The most common Glucophage XR side effects are diarrhea, gas, headache, indigestion, metallic taste, nausea, stomach upset, and vomiting. If you are experiencing any serious side effects such as high blood sugar levels (confusion; drowsiness; flushing; increased urination; rapid breathing; thirst), lactic acidosis (muscle pain; unusual sleepiness; stomach ache, and tiredness), and signs of severe allergic reaction (e.g., difficult breathing; hives; rash; swelling) please inform your doctor immediately.
Glucophage XR Precautions
Do NOT take Glucophage XR if you are allergic to Metformin HCl or any of the ingredients in Glucophage XR medication. Before taking Glucophage XR oral, tell your doctor if you have had any medical conditions such as adrenal/pituitary gland problems, dehydration, heart problems, high blood ketone or acid levels, kidney or liver disease, metabolic acidosis, serious infection. Tell your doctor about all the prescriptions or over-the-counter (OTC) medications you use. They may interact with Glucophage XR drug, especially of: cephalexin, cimetidine, and diuetics. To be sure Glucophage XR medicine is helping your condition; your blood will need to be tested on a regular basis. Your liver function may also need to be tested, and you may need regular eye exams.
