Glumetza Information
Glumetza (Metformin Sustained Release) is an oral diabetes medication used in combination with diet and exercise, as well as insulin or other medications, to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. Glumetza is used when diet, exercise, and weight reduction have not been found to lower blood glucose well enough on its own. Controlling high blood sugar helps prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems. Glumetza is not for treatment of type 1 diabetes. Glumetza works by decreasing glucose production, decreasing intestinal absorption of glucose, and improving insulin sensitivity allowing for better blood sugar control. To make sure Glumetza is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have metabolic acidosis or diabetic ketoacidosis, or if you have ever had kidney or liver disease, high ketone levels, or heart disease or heart failure. Tell your doctor about any other medications you are currently taking in order to reduce the risk of interactions. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding in order to discuss risks. Your dosage may need to be different during pregnancy. If you need to have any type of x-ray or CT scan using an injected dye, you may need to temporarily stop taking Glumetza. Avoid consuming alcohol while using Glumetza, as it can make your condition worse. If you experience any serious side effects, signs of lactic acidosis, or signs of an allergic reaction, seek emergency medical attention.
