Heparin Information
Heparin (Heparin sodium) is used to prevent the formation of blood clots from certain medical conditions or procedures. The drug may also be used before surgery to reduce the risk of blood clots. Heparin is also used in small amounts to prevent blood clots from forming in catheters left in veins over time. The active ingredient in Heparin is Heparin Sodium. Anticoagulants like Heparin Sodium decrease the clotting ability of blood.
Heparin Side Effects
The most common side effects of Heparin may include redness or bruising at the injection site, nausea, vomiting, and headache. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects, such as:
• Signs of a blood clot, such as sudden numbness or weakness, vision problems, swelling in arm or leg;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, breathing difficulties, itching, or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat;
• Sudden confusion;
• Unusual bleeding
Heparin Precautions
Do not use Heparin if you are allergic to Heparin sodium or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have Uncontrolled bleeding, Uncontrolled high blood pressure, Liver disease, Blood clotting disorder, Stomach disorder, Are menstruating, think you may be pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Heparin and other medications, such as warfarin, nicotine, tetracycline, digitalis, diclofenac, aspirin, etc. Do not use Heparin if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant without informing your doctor. It is unknown if Heparin Sodium will harm an unborn baby. Do not use Heparin while breastfeeding without talking to your doctor. It is unknown if Heparin passes into breast milk. Do not give this drug to children without talking to your doctor. Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Heparin is injected under the skin or as an infusion into a vein.
Your doctor will give you your first dose and may teach you how to use the medication by yourself properly. Read and carefully follow all instructions for using this medicine. Ask your doctor if you don't understand all the instructions on administering Heparin Sodium. Prepare an injection only when you are ready to give it. Do not use this medicine if it has changed color or has particles in it. Use a needle and syringe only once, then place them in a puncture-proof container for sharp objects. Heparin increases your risk of bleeding, which can be life-threatening. You will need frequent tests to measure your blood clotting time. Store this medication at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep it out of the reach of children.
