Hytrin Information
Hytrin (Terazosin) is a prescription medication used to treat men with symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia), including difficulty in initiating urination, weak stream, and the need to urinate often or urgently (including during the middle of the night). Terazosin may also be used alone or with other drugs to treat high blood pressure. The active ingredient in Hytrin is Terazosin. Alpha-blockers such as Terazosin work by relaxing the prostate and part of the bladder muscles. This helps to relieve symptoms of BPH, such as difficulty in initiating urination, weak stream, and the need to urinate often or urgently. Treating benign prostatic hyperplasia with Hytrin tablets prevents frequent toilet visits, inability to hold urine (urgency and hesitancy), and embarrassment due to leakage of urine.
Hytrin Side Effects
The most common side effects of Hytrin may include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, palpitation, hypotension, impotence, and erectile dysfunction.
Call your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• A rapid drop in blood pressure;
• Blurred vision;
• Penis erection that is painful or lasts 4 hours or longer;
• Reduced sexual libido;
• Syncopal attack or sudden fall
Hytrin Precautions
Before taking Terazosin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, other alpha-blockers such as doxazosin or prazosin, or any other allergies. Hytrin comes as a tablet and should be taken orally according to your prescription label. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. Take the tablet once daily at bedtime, with or without food. The antihypertensive effect of Hytrin may cause a sudden drop in your blood pressure, which could lead to dizziness or fainting, especially after taking your first dose. It is recommended that the first dose of Terazosin be taken at bedtime. Your doctor starts you on a low dose (usually 1 mg) and gradually increases your dose as your treatment progresses. Avoid alcoholic beverages and smoking cigarettes while using Hytrin. It may take up to a month to improve your symptoms and up to 6 weeks before you see the full benefit of Hytrin when treating BPH. Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens.
Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history; if you have an eye problem (cataract or glaucoma), prostate or bladder cancer, liver disease, or chronic kidney disease. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or plan to become pregnant. Hytrin is usually used to treat men with BPH. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Hytrin and other medications such as aspirin, prazosin, and tamsulosin.
