Isoptin Information
Isoptin (Verapamil SR) is used to treat high blood pressure, angina, and irregular heartbeats. The drug is also used in patients who have recently had a heart attack. Calcium channel blockers like Verapamil SR work by opening the blood vessels to let more blood and oxygen reach the heart while lowering high blood pressure.
Isoptin Side Effects
The most common side effects of Isoptin may include constipation, dizziness, headache, tiredness, flushing, and upset stomach. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Chest pain;
• Fever;
• Shortness of breath;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, breathing difficulties, itching or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat;
• Slow, fast, or irregular heartbeats
Isoptin Precautions
Do not use Isoptin if you are allergic to Verapamil SR or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have heart failure, kidney problems, liver problems, low blood pressure, muscle conditions like myasthenia gravis, stroke, think you may be pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Isoptin and other medications, such as atenolol, digoxin, atorvastatin, midazolam, phenytoin, ciclosporin, erythromycin, ritonavir, colchicine, theophylline, cimetidine, metformin, St. John’s wort, etc. Do not use Isoptin if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant without informing your doctor. Verapamil SR can affect an unborn baby. Discuss the benefits and risks of taking this drug in pregnancy with your doctor. Do not use Isoptin while breastfeeding without talking to your doctor. Verapamil SR passes into breast milk but is unlikely to harm a nursing infant. Do not give this drug to children below 18 years without talking to your doctor.
Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Isoptin comes as tablets. Your doctor will tell you how many tablets to take and when to take them, depending on your condition. Swallow the tablets whole with a full glass of water. Verapamil SR is a sustained-release medicine, which means the drug is released into your blood over an extended period. Do not crush or chew it. They will not work as well if you do so. Take this drug at the same time each time to help you remember and for the best effect. Take this drug with or shortly after meals. Avoid taking alcohol when using this drug. Alcohol may increase the side effects of Isoptin. Do not take grapefruit juice. It can increase the amount of Verapamil in your blood. Isoptin may cause dizziness. Be careful when getting up from a sitting or lying position. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how the drug affects you. Store Isoptin at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep all medicines away from children.
