Keflex Information

Keflex (cephalexin) is used to treat infections in adults and children who are at least 1 year old. Keflex belongs to the class of medication called cephalosporins, which works by stopping or slowing the growth of bacterial cells by preventing bacteria from making the cell wall which surrounds each cell. The lack of the cell wall causes the bacteria to be inactive. Keflex can be used for patients with: bone infections, bronchitis, laryngitis, middle ear infections, pneumonia, throat infections and urinary tract infections.

Keflex Side Effects

Common side effects of Keflex include:
• Diarrhea;
• Indigestion;
• Nausea;
• Stomach pain;
• Vaginal itching / discharge;
• Vomiting

Contact your doctor at once if any of these adverse effects occur:
• Cold hands and feet;
• Dark colored urine;
• Easy bruising;
• Fever;
• Pain in your side or lower back;
• Painful urination;
• Pale skin;
• Purple or red spots under your skin;
• Seizure;
• Severe stomach pain, diarrhea that is watery or bloody (even if it occurs months after your last dose);
• Unusual tiredness, feeling light-headed or short of breath;
• Weakness;
• Yellowed skin

Keflex Precautions

Do not take this medication if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients. Inform your doctor of any other medications you take including prescription medication, over the counter drugs, vitamins and herbal supplements, to avoid any negative interactions between drugs. Tell your doctor specifically if you take:
• Metformin;
• Probenecid

Inform your doctor of your previous medical history or if you have:
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease;
• Stomach or intestinal disorders such as colitis or diabetes

You should not use Keflex while you are pregnant unless the benefits outweigh the risks and it is absolutely necessary. Keflex can pass into breast milk consult your physician before nursing your child.
