Lexiva Information

Lexiva (Fosamprenavir) is an antiviral medicine that prevents human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) from multiplying in the body. Lexiva is used to treat HIV, the virus that can cause acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Lexiva belongs to the class of medication called protease inhibitors, which works by decreasing the amount of HIV in the body to allow the immune system to function better. Lexiva is used along with other HIV medications to help control the HIV infection. Lexiva is for use in adults and children who are at least 4 weeks old. This medicine is not a cure for HIV or AIDS.

Lexiva Side Effects

Common side effects of Lexiva include:
• Changes in the shape or location of body fat (especially in the arms, legs, face, neck, breasts, and waist);
• Diarrhea;
• Fever, or other signs of infection;
• Headache;
• Nausea/vomiting;
• Rash

Call your doctor right away if any of these adverse effects occur:
• Confusion;
• Dark colored urine;
• High blood sugar – increased thirst, increased urination, dry mouth, fruity breath odor;
• Impotence;
• Menstrual changes;
• Pale or yellowed skin;
• Problems with balance and eye movement;
• Symptoms of kidney stones – sudden and severe pain in your lower back or side, blood in your urine, pain or burning when you urinate;
• Signs of new infection – fever, night sweats, swollen glands, cold sores, cough, wheezing, diarrhea, weight loss;
• Swelling in your neck or throat;
• Trouble speaking or swallowing

Lexiva Precautions

Do not use this medication if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients. Inform your doctor of any other medications you take including prescription medication, over the counter drugs, vitamins and herbal supplements, to avoid any negative interactions between drugs. Tell your doctor if you take alfuzosin, lovastatin, rifampin, ritonavir, sildenafil, simvastatin, etc.

Inform your doctor of your previous medical history or if you have:
• Allergies to sulfa drugs;
• Bleeding disorder (hemophilia);
• Diabetes;
• Liver disease (hepatitis B or C);
• Kidney disease

Only use this medication when pregnant if it is absolutely necessary. Treatment can lower the risk of passing HIV infection to your baby, and Lexiva may be part of that treatment. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is unknown if Lexiva can pass into breastmilk. HIV can be transmitted in breast milk, therefore do not breast feed.
