Linessa Information
Linessa (Desogestrel/Ethinyl Estradiol) is used to prevent pregnancy in women of reproductive age. The drug may also be taken to regulate menstrual cycle. Estrogens like Ethinyl Estradiol prevent ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary). Progestins like Desogestrel thicken the mucus in the cervix to stop sperm from reaching an egg. This drug is a birth control pill and will not protect you and your partner from sexually transmitted infections.
Linessa Side Effects
The most common side effects of Linessa may include cramps; breast tenderness; dizziness; headaches; acne; Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Breakthrough bleeding or spotting between periods;
• Depression;
• Increased blood pressure;
• Unusual tiredness or weakness
Linessa Precautions
Do not use Linessa if you are allergic to Desogestrel, Ethinyl Estradiol or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have liver disease; have ever had a heart attack; have benign or malignant liver tumors; have undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding; have very high cholesterol; have had coronary artery disease; think you may be pregnant or plan to become pregnant; are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Linessa and other medications, like ampicillin; cholestyramine; cyclosporine; melatonin; rifampin; St. John’s wort;. Do not use Linessa if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant without informing your doctor. The drug is used to prevent pregnancy. It is not known if this medication will harm your unborn baby. Do not use Linessa while breastfeeding without talking to your doctor. Desogestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol passes into your breastmilk and may harm nursing infants. It is not known if this drug is safe for use in children younger than 18 years old. It may harm them. Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Your dosage will depend on the type of pack you purchase. For the 21-day pack tablets, take one tablet daily for 21 days. For the 28-day pack tablets, take one tablet daily for 21 days and reminder pills daily for 7 days. After stopping this drug, you should delay pregnancy until at least one normal menstrual cycle has occurred to help you date the pregnancy. If you do not menstruate for 6 months or more after stopping the birth control pill, inform your doctor. Store this medication at room temperature and keep it out of the reach of children.
