Lovenox Injection Information

Lovenox Injection (Enoxaparin) is used to prevent and treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT). DVT occurs when a blood clot (thrombus) forms in one or more of the deep veins in the body, usually the legs. Without proper treatment, these blood clots can sometimes travel to the lungs and block blood vessels, resulting in a serious condition called pulmonary embolism. A DVT can occur after certain types of surgery or in people bedridden due to a prolonged illness. Symptoms of DVT include pain, swelling, and tenderness in one of the legs, a heavy ache in the affected area, or warm skin in the area of the clot. Sometimes, there are no noticeable symptoms. Lovenox injection is used in combination with aspirin to prevent complications from angina (chest pain) and heart attacks. Lovenox is also effective in treating ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and for Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) to open up the coronary arteries after a heart attack. Anticoagulants and low-molecular-weight heparin, like Enoxaparin, work by blocking the body’s natural clotting factors. This makes your blood less likely to form dangerous clots. It also keeps the clots present from getting bigger.

Lovenox Injection Side Effects

The most common side effects of Lovenox may include anemia; confusion; diarrhea; nausea; irritation, or bruising at the injection site; Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Abnormal vaginal bleeding;
• Easy bruising or red spots under the skin;
• Nosebleeds;
• Signs of bleeding in the brain, e.g., sudden weakness, sudden severe headache, problems with speech or vision;
• Signs of low red blood cells, e.g., pale skin, unusual tiredness, cold hands, and feet, feeling light-headed;
• Unusual bleeding or bleeding that will not stop

Lovenox Injection Precautions

Do not use Lovenox if you are allergic to Enoxaparin or any other ingredients in this medication. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have active or uncontrolled bleeding; have had a recent brain or spine surgery; have a spinal catheter in place or if a catheter has been recently removed; have kidney disease; have liver disease; have a stomach ulcer; have eye problems caused by diabetes; are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or plan to become pregnant; are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Lovenox and other medications like heparin, anagrelide, alteplase, apixaban, etc. Do not use Lovenox if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant without informing your doctor. It is not known if this medication will harm your unborn baby. Using Enoxaparin in pregnancy increases your risk of bleeding. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant and have a mechanical heart valve. Do not use Lovenox while breastfeeding without talking to your doctor. It is not known if Enoxaparin passes into your breast milk. Talk to your doctor about the benefits and risks of this medication during pregnancy. Do not give this drug to children less than 18 years old. It may harm them. Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Lovenox is usually injected under the skin or as an infusion into the vein. You will receive this medication every day until your bleeding condition improves. Your doctor will teach you how to administer this drug at home. Do not use Lovenox if you do not understand all the instructions for proper use. Prepare the injection only when you are ready to use it. It would be best if you were sitting or lying down during the injection. Your doctor will show you where on your body to inject Lovenox. Use a different place each time you give an injection. Do not inject Lovenox into the same place two times in a row. Do not inject this medication into a muscle. Each syringe is for one use only. Throw it away after a single use. Avoid activities that may increase your risk of bleeding or injury while using Lovenox. Use extra care when shaving or brushing your teeth to prevent bleeding. Store at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
