Noroxin Information

Noroxin (Norfloxacin) is an antibiotic used to treat infection of the urinary tract; bacterial infection of the urethra (tube from the bladder to the penis or vaginal opening) or cervix (lower part of the uterus). Norfloxacin is also used to treat gonorrhea. This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as quinolone antibiotics. Antibacterial drugs like Norfloxacin treat only bacterial infections. They do not treat viral infections such as the common cold. Norfloxacin works by preventing the bacterial DNA from working, thereby preventing growth, and killing bacteria. Norfloxacin is available as 400 mg tablets.

Noroxin Side Effects

The most common side effects of Noroxin may include confusion, nausea, dizziness, tremors, headache; seeing things, depression, agitation; difficulty sleeping, anxiety, nervousness and suicidal thoughts. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Allergic reactions (swelling of the face, lips throat, hives, difficulty breathing);
• Destruction of red blood cells (fatigue, shortness of breath, yellowing of skin and eyes);
• Diarrhea that is watery or bloody;
• Depression, confusion, hallucinations, paranoia, tremors, feeling anxious, unusual thoughts or behavior, insomnia, nightmares;
• Inflamed pancreas (abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting);
• Lower blood platelets (increased bleeding, bruising or red/purple spots on the skin);
• Liver or kidney problems;
• Pain, swelling or rupture of your tendon;
• Problems in your nerves (pain, burning, tingling, numbness or weakness);
• Serious skin reactions (widespread blisters on skin, mouth and nose, peeling skin)

Noroxin Precautions

Do not use Noroxin if you are allergic to Norfloxacin or to any other quinolone antibacterial agents. Before you start taking this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have had seizures; tendon problems after using of quinolone antibiotics; kidney disease; muscle disorder; heart rhythm disorder; mental/mood disorders; kidney or liver disease; diabetes; low potassium; are pregnant or planning to become pregnant; are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Noroxin and other medications. If vision is affected with the use of Norfloxacin, talk to your eye specialist immediately. Avoid excessive exposure to the sun when taking Norfloxacin. Photosensitivity skin reactions can occur with symptoms such as inflamed red skin, hives, rash, itchiness and blisters. It is best to take the tablet with a full glass of water, one hour before, or two hours after eating a meal or drinking milk. Drink plenty of liquids every day during Norfloxacin treatment (e.g. water or juice) to avoid potential side effects.
