Seasonale Information
Seasonale (Levonorgestrel/Ethinyl Estradiol) is used to prevent pregnancy. Hormonal contraceptives like Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol prevent ovulation. They also cause changes in your cervical mucus and uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to reach the uterus and harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.
Seasonale Side Effects
The most common side effects of Seasonale may include mild nausea, breast tenderness, appetite changes, vaginal discharge, and weight changes. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Breast lump;
• Chest pain;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, breathing difficulties, itching or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat;
• Signs of depression, such as sleep problems, weakness, tiredness, mood changes;
• Sudden cough;
• Sudden numbness or weakness
Seasonale Precautions
Do not use Seasonale if you are allergic to Levonorgestrel, Ethinyl Estradiol, or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have a blood-clotting disorder, breast or uterine cancer, circulation problems, heart disease, irregular menstrual cycles, liver disease, severe migraines, uncontrolled high blood pressure, unusual vaginal bleeding, think you may be pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Seasonale and other medications, such as lorazepam, lamotrigine, levothyroxine, metformin, prednisone, topiramate, tramadol, etc. Do not use Seasonale if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant without informing your doctor. The drug may harm an unborn baby. Stop using this medicine and tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant or if you miss two menstrual periods in a row. If you have recently had a baby, wait at least 4 weeks before taking birth control pills. Do not use Seasonale while breastfeeding without talking to your doctor. Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing infant. This medication may also slow breast milk production. Do not give this drug to children without talking to your doctor.
Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Seasonale comes as a tablet. Do not break or chew the medicine. Swallow the pill whole with water. You will take your first pill on the first day of your period or the first Sunday after your period begins. You may need to use back-up birth control, such as condoms or a spermicide when you first start using Seasonale. Take one pill every day, no more than 24 hours apart. When the pills run out, start a new pack the following day. You may get pregnant if you do not take one pill daily. Do not smoke while taking Seasonale, especially if you are older than 35 years of age. Seasonale will not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV and AIDS. Use a condom to protect yourself from these diseases. You will not have a menstrual period every month while taking this drug. Instead, your period should occur every 12 weeks. You may have a breakthrough period during your first three months. Inform your doctor if this bleeding continues or is very heavy. Store Seasonale at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
