Sectral Information
Sectral (Acebutolol) is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Sectral can be used alone or with other medicines to treat this condition. Sectral is also used to treat chest pains (angina) due to ischemic heart disease (disease caused by plaque building up along the inner walls of the arteries of the heart, which narrows the arteries and reduces blood flow to the heart). Sectral belongs to a class of drugs called “beta-blockers”. These drugs block the action of certain chemicals on the heart that increase blood pressure and increase heart rate. This medicine does not cure your disease. It helps to control it. Therefore, it is important to continue taking Sectral regularly even if you feel fine.
Sectral Side Effects
The most common side effects of Sectral may include constipation; diarrhea; sleep problems; tiredness; nausea; dizziness; skin rashes. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• A light-headed feeling, like you might pass out;
• Dangerously high blood pressure (severe headache, blurred vision, pounding in your neck or ears, nosebleed, anxiety, confusion, severe chest pain, shortness of breath, irregular heartbeats);
• Low blood pressure (dizziness, fainting, light-headedness. May occur when you go from lying or sitting to standing up);
• New or worsening chest pain;
• Slow heartbeats;
• Shortness of breath (even with mild exertion), swelling, rapid weight gain.
Sectral Precautions
Do not use Sectral if you are allergic to Acebutolol or to any other ingredients in this medication or if you have any other medical problems, especially if you have heart rhythm disorders, heart failure, low blood pressure (hypotension), or have a tumour of the adrenal gland. Before you start taking this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have psoriasis; hyperthyroidism; any liver or kidney problems; any other heart problems; asthma, bronchitis, emphysema or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); are currently taking any other prescription or over the-counter medications; have any known allergies; diabetes or other problems with blood sugar levels; are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant; are breastfeeding or are less than 18 years old. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Sectral and other medications. Before you perform tasks which may require special attention, wait until you know how you respond to Sectral. Dizziness or fatigue can especially occur after the first dose and when the dose is increased.
