Syntocinon Information

Syntocinon (Oxytocin) is used to start or help contractions during childbirth. It is also used to help in the management of a miscarriage and during a caesarean section. Syntocinon may also be used to prevent and control bleeding after the delivery of a baby. Oxytocics like Oxytocin work by making the muscles of the womb contract.

The most common side effects of Syntocinon may include headache, feeling sick, and chest pain. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Excessive or continuous contractions;
• Fluid retention;
• Irregular heartbeat;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, breathing difficulties, itching or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat;
• Spasms of the muscles of the womb

Syntocinon Precautions

Do not use Syntocinon if you are allergic to Oxytocin or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have had a previous caesarean section, elevated blood pressure, heart or circulation problems, irregular heartbeat, kidney problems, latex allergy, pre-eclampsia, pregnancy complications, small pelvis, think you may be pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. Do not receive Syntocinon if your doctor thinks that starting or increasing contractions would be unsuitable for you, if labor or vaginal delivery is not available, if your womb is overextended, or if you have had five or more pregnancies in the past. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Syntocinon and other medications, such as prostaglandins, halothane, anesthetic medicines, etc.

Do not use Syntocinon if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant without informing your doctor. Oxytocin will harm an unborn baby if used incorrectly or in excessive doses. Discuss the benefits and risks of using this drug in pregnancy with your doctor. Do not use Syntocinon while breastfeeding without talking to your doctor. Oxytocin passes into breast milk but is unlikely to harm a nursing infant. Do not give this drug to children without talking to your doctor. Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Syntocinon comes as an injection that should only be administered by a doctor in a hospital setting. The drug is usually diluted before use and given as an intravenous infusion. Your dosage will depend on your condition. Your doctor may tell you to reduce your fluid intake when using this drug. Syntocinon can induce labour. Women with contractions should not drive or use machines. Store Syntocinon at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
