Urocit (also known as Urocit-K, Generic name: Potassium Citrate) is a prescription medication used to prevent the formation of certain types of kidney stones including renal tubular acidosis. Urocit-K contains the active ingredient Potassium Citrate. Potassium Citrate belongs to a class of drugs called urinary alkalinizers. It helps the kidney to decrease the production of uric acid, thereby to prevent gout and kidney stones. Urocit-K is available in an extended release oral tablet form containing potassium citrate. Take Urocit-K exactly as your doctor has prescribed for you.
Urocit-K can also be used to prevent kidney stones in dogs and cats. Use Urocit-K as your veterinarian has prescribed for your pets.
Urocit K Side Effects:
The most common Urocit-K side effects are abdominal pain, diarrhea, gas, headache, nausea, and vomiting. If you are experiencing any severe side effects such as anxiety, black or bloody stools, confusion, fast heartbeat, intestinal bleeding, muscle pain, mental or mood changes, and a sign of serious allergic reaction (e.g., difficult breathing; itching; rash; swelling), please inform your doctor immediately.
Urocit K Precautions:
Do NOT take Urocit-K oral if you are allergic to Potassium Chloride or any of the ingredients in Urocit-K medication. Before taking Urocit-K tablets, tell your doctor if you have had any medical conditions such as Addison’s disease, chronic diarrea, dehydration, gout, heart problems, high potassium levels, low calcium levels, stomach ulcers, kidney disease, uncontrolled diabetes, or urinary tract infections. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications you use. They may interact with Urocit-K drug, especially of: antacids, aspirin, certain blood pressure medications, heart medications, lithium, potassium supplements, pain medicines, and certain water pills (potassium-sparing diuretics). Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Avoid lying down for at least 30 minutes after taking Urocit-K tablets.
