Vagisil Information
Vagisil (Lidocaine) is an over-the-counter medication used to provide soothing relief from external itching, burning, and irritation of the skin around the vaginal and anus. The drug may also be used to numb an area before a procedure. The active ingredient in Vagisil is Lidocaine. Local anesthesia, such as Lidocaine, stops vaginal itching by blocking nerves from sending pain signals to the brain. This action numbs the skin and stops itching, irritation, and the urge to scratch.
Vagisil Side Effects
The most common side effects of Vagisil may include application site redness, blistering, and worsening of the itch or irritation.
Call your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• Skin excoriation;
• Worsening of your symptoms;
• Whitish discharge from the treated area;
• Worsening of symptoms despite regular use
Vagisil Precautions
Before using this medication, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Vagisil Lidocaine or have other problems when using Vagisil. It is crucial to continue using this medication exactly as your doctor prescribes. Vagisil comes in different forms, including cream, powder, wipes, bath bombs, and feminine wash. Vagisil is for external use on the skin just outside of the vagina and around the anus. Do not take it by mouth. Wash your hands before or after use. Apply a thin layer of the cream to the affected area and rub it in gently. You can repeat the treatment 3 to 4 times daily for up to one week. The drug may come with a unique applicator or dressing. Ask your doctor how to use them properly. Use Vagisil powder after shower and bath. Sprinkle on your panties or vagina. For the medicated wipes, unfold it and gently wipe your external vaginal area from front to back. Use a wipe just once and throw it away. Vagisil bath bombs are pH-friendly to support sensitive vaginal skin. For the feminine wash, pour into your hand or a washcloth and apply to the affected area. Rinse thoroughly. Do not get this medicine in your eyes, nose, or ears. If it does get on these areas, rinse it immediately. Do not use Vagisil for more than 7 days, and consult your doctor if symptoms persist for more than one week.
Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history; if you have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism, liver disease, kidney failure, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, recent vaginal infection, or a history of allergy to any numbing medicine.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or plan to become pregnant. Vagisil is a topical medication and is not expected to pose a risk to a fetus. However, discuss the risks and benefits of this drug in pregnancy with your doctor. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Lidocaine may pass into breast milk in trace amounts and is unlikely to harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Vagisil and other medications such as quinine, phenytoin, prilocaine, and topical dapsone. Store your medicines out of children’s reach.
