Velphoro Information
Velphoro (Sucroferric Oxyhydroxide) is a prescription medication that helps to prevent low levels of calcium in the blood (hypocalcemia) which can be caused by elevated phosphorous levels. This medication is specifically for patients with chronic kidney disease who are on dialysis. Velphoro belongs to the class of medication called phosphate binders. Velphoro contains a form of iron not absorbed by your body, this excess iron works by binding to phosphates which are then passed out in your stool.

Common side effects of Velphoro include:
• Dark colored / discolored feces;
• Diarrhea;
• Nausea
Velphoro Precautions
Inform your doctor if you are allergic to any ingredients of this medication including Sucroferric Oxyhydroxide, or if you experience any signs of allergic reactions like; hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. Before you take this medication, inform your doctor of your medical history and about all the medications you take including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. There may be a drug interaction between Velphoro and other medications. If you take levothyroxine, take it at least 4 hours before Velphoro, and if you take doxycycline, aspirin, or cephalexin, take it at least 1 hour before you take Velphoro. To ensure that Velphoro is safe for you, inform your doctor if you have a history of:
• Iron overload disorder (hemochromatosis);
• Liver disease;
• Stomach or intestinal disorder/surgery
You must inform your physician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before taking this medication. This medication is not approved to be used by individuals younger than 18 years old.
