Videx Information

Videx (Didanosine) is a prescription medication used with other antiretroviral agents for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 infection and to limit possible complications associated with this condition. The active ingredient in Videx is Didanosine. Nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTI) such as Videx work by Inhibiting in vitro replication of HIV via chain termination & interference with HIV-RNA dependent DNA polymerase. Thus, reducing the multiplication of these viral cells in your body. It would be best to know that the Videx capsule does not cure HIV infection, and it does not prevent others from contracting the disease.

Videx Side Effects

The most common side effects of Videx may include nausea, vomiting, rash, diarrhea, body itching, and abdominal pain.

Call your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• Continuous numbness, tingling, or burning pain in your hands, arms, legs, or feet;
• Symptoms suggestive of pancreatitis include constipation, bloating, passage of dark urine, loss of appetite, and severe abdominal pain;
• Worsening of symptoms

Videx Precautions

Before taking Didanosine (Videx), tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or have any other allergies. Videx is a capsule that should be taken orally on an empty stomach, usually once a day. Follow your prescription label carefully. It would be best to continue taking this medication (and other HIV medications) exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not skip any doses. Do not increase your dose, take this drug more often than prescribed, or stop taking it (or other HIV medicines) even for a short time unless directed to do so by your doctor. You may develop lactic acidosis, a dangerous lactic acid build-up in your blood. Call your doctor or get emergency medical help if you have unusual muscle pain, trouble breathing, stomach pain, dizziness, cold, or feeling very weak or tired. Avoid taking alcoholic beverages while taking Videx medicine. Videx is not the cure for HIV/AIDS. To decrease your risk of spreading HIV disease to others, continue to take all HIV medications exactly as prescribed by your doctor and use an effective barrier method (latex or polyurethane condoms) during sexual activity as directed by your doctor. Do not reuse or share needles with anyone. Tell your doctor immediately if you have symptoms suggestive of peripheral neuropathy, such as numbness, tingling, or burning pain in your hands, arms, legs, or feet.

Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history; if you have been diagnosed with chronic liver disease, chronic kidney disease, tuberculosis or chronic cough, history of chronic alcohol consumption, obesity, pancreatitis, and peripheral neuropathy (numbness of hands and feet). Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, and use your medications properly to control your infection. HIV can be passed to your baby if the virus is not controlled during pregnancy. If you are pregnant, do not take Videx together with stavudine. This combination can be hazardous during pregnancy. Women with HIV or AIDS should not breastfeed a baby. Even if your baby is born without HIV, the virus may be passed to the baby in your breast milk. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Videx and other medications such as elvitegravir/cobicistat/emtricitabine/tenofovir DF, febuxostat, ribavirin, allopurinol, and stavudine. Keep out of the reach of children. Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed.
