Visanne (Dienogest) belongs to a class of drugs called progestins, which are medications that act like progesterone in the body. Dienogest is a progestin medication used in birth control which also treats endometriosis. It is also used to treat heavy periods as well as in menopausal hormone therapy. Visanne is used to help reduce pelvic pain experienced by women with endometriosis. Endometriosis is a condition where endometrium like tissue is found outside the uterus which causes chronic inflammation. This medication is to be taken orally once a day, with or without food. This medication should also be taken at the same time every day, if possible.
Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have any allergies or have a medical history of liver problems, migraine headaches, vaginal bleeding, blood clots, a history of known or suspected estrogen-dependent tumours such as breast or uterine cancer before taking this medication. Contact your doctor if you experience any of these side effects and they are severe or bothersome: acne, breast discomfort, diarrhea, difficulty sleeping, dry eyes or skin, hair loss, nausea, vomiting or weight gain. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice signs of a blood clot in blood vessels, such as sudden vision change or chest pain.
