Yasmin Information

Yasmin (Drospirenone 3mg/Ethinyl Estradiol 30mcg) is used as a contraceptive to prevent pregnancy. Yasmin is a combination of two medicines – Drospirenone and Ethinyl Estradiol. Progestins like Drospirenone and Estrogens like Ethinyl Estradiol prevent pregnancy by preventing ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary). They also cause changes in your cervical mucus and uterine lining, making it difficult for sperm to reach the uterus and for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.

Yasmin Side Effects

The most common side effects of Yasmin may include breast tenderness, headache, mood changes, nausea, and weight gain. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Severe migraine headaches;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, breathing difficulties, itching or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat;
• Signs of depression, such as sleep problems, weakness, tiredness;
• Signs of liver problems, such as appetite loss, stomach pain, tiredness, clay-colored stools

Yasmin Precautions

Do not use Yasmin if you are allergic to Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol, or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have adrenal gland disorder, depression, diabetes, gallbladder disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, kidney disease, liver disease, severe migraine headaches, underactive thyroid, unusual vaginal bleeding, think you may be pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Yasmin and other medications, such as ritonavir, ibuprofen, clonazepam, levothyroxine, metformin, etc. Do not use Yasmin if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant without informing your doctor. Yasmin may harm a fetus. If you recently had a baby, tell your doctor before using Yasmin. Wait at least four weeks before starting this medicine. Do not use Yasmin while breastfeeding without talking to your doctor. Drospirenone and Ethinyl Estradiol may pass into breast milk and harm a nursing infant. The medication can also affect milk production. Do not give this drug to children who have not started menstruating without talking to your doctor.

Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Take the first pill on the first day of your period or the first Sunday after your period begins. You may need backup birth control, such as condoms, when you first start using this medication. Take one pill every day, no more than 24 hours apart. You could get pregnant if you do not take one pill daily. You may have breakthrough bleeding, especially during the first three months. Tell your doctor if this bleeding continues or is very heavy. If you need major surgery or will be on long-term bed rest, you may need to stop using this medicine for a short time. Yasmin will not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases, such as HIV, gonorrhea, or chlamydia. Using a condom is the only way to protect yourself from these diseases. This medication may cause dark, blotchy areas on your face and skin. Sunlight may make this effect worse. Limit your time in the sun and use sunscreen when outdoors. Store this medication at room temperature, away from moisture and light. Keep it out of the reach of children.
