Yaz Information

Yaz (Drosperinone/Ethinyl Estradiol) is used to prevent pregnancy. This drug may also be used to treat moderate acne in women who wish to use birth control pills and to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) symptoms. Symptoms of PMDD include anxiety, depression, irritability, lack of energy, and trouble concentrating. Yaz is a combination of two medicines - Drosperinone and Ethinyl Estradiol. Progestins like Drosperinone and estrogens like Ethinyl Estradiol prevent ovulation. The drug also causes changes in your cervical mucus and uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to reach the uterus and harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.

Yaz Side Effects

The most common side effects of Yaz may include breast tenderness, changes in menstrual periods, mood changes, nausea, and weight gain. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Pain or swelling in one or both legs;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, breathing difficulties, itching or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat;
• Sudden vision loss

Yaz Precautions

Do not use Yaz if you are allergic to Drosperinone, Ethinyl Estradiol, or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have a history of blood clots, depression, heart disease, high cholesterol, inflammatory bowel disease, migraine headaches with aura, severe kidney disease, thyroid disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, unexplained vaginal bleeding, think you may be pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Yaz and other medications, such as tetracycline, ampicillin, acetaminophen, heparin, St. John’s wort, etc. Do not use Yaz when pregnant or if you miss two menstrual periods in a row. If you recently had a baby, wait at least 4 weeks before taking this medicine. Discuss the benefits and risks of using this drug in pregnancy with your doctor. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. Drospirenone and Ethinyl estradiol may pass into breast milk and affect a nursing infant. Yaz may also slow breast milk production. Do not use this drug when breastfeeding.

Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Yaz comes as a pill. You may need to use back-up birth control like condoms when you first start using this medication. Take one pill every day, no more than 24 hours apart. You could get pregnant if you do not take one pill daily. You may experience breakthrough bleeding, especially during the first 3 months of using the drug. Tell your doctor if this bleeding continues or is very heavy. This medicine does not prevent you or your partner from sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV, chlamydia, or gonorrhea. Store Yaz at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
