Zanidip Information
Zanidip (Lercanidipine hydrochloride) is used to treat high blood pressure also known as hypertension in adults over the age of 18 years. Zanidip can also be used in the management of angina pectoris and Raynaud's syndrome. It is also used in adults for the treatment of mild to moderate essential hypertension. It belongs to a group of medicines called Calcium Channel Blockers (dihydropyridine derivatives). It works by relaxing and opening some of the blood vessels allowing the blood to circulate more freely around the body. This lowers the blood pressure and allows the heart to work more efficiently preventing resistance to the flow of blood through the blood vessels.
Zanidip Side Effects
Common side effects of Zanidip include headaches, flushing, peripheral edema, heartburn, nausea, epigastric pain, flushing, headache, gastrointestinal disturbances (such as heartburn, nausea, epigastric pain, or diarrhea), fatigue, or sleepiness. Speak to your doctor immediately if you have any of these serious side effects:
• Angina (chest pain or tightness);
• Abdominal pain;
• Dizziness or fainting;
• Faster heart beats;
• Hypotension;
• Increased heartbeat;
• Signs of allergy (such as rash, itching, or hives on the skin);
• Swelling of the ankles, feet, or lower legs;
• Palpitation (heart pounding or racing);
• Sudden reddening of the face, neck, or upper chest;
• Tachycardia.
Zanidip Precautions
Tell your doctor if you are taking drugs that are inhibitors of CYP3A4 isoenzyme or other drugs that can cause interactions such as:
• ACE-inhibitors (such as lisinopril, captopril, enalapril, and others);
• Angiotensin II receptor antagonists (such as candesartan, telmisartan, valsartan and others);
• Antiepileptics (such as carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbitone, and primidone);
• Antifungal medicines (such as ketoconazole, and itraconazole);
• Antivirals (such as ritonavir);
• Antifungal medicines (such as ketoconazole);
• Beta-blockers (such as bisoprolol, metoprolol, Atenolol, and others);
• Diuretics (such as furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide, and others);
• Macrolide antibiotics (such as erythromycin, troleandomycin, and clarithromycin);
• Medicines to ease breathing (such as aminophylline, and theophylline).
Do not take Zanidip if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Lercanidipine hydrochloride or any other ingredients of Zanidip or if you have had allergic reactions to drugs closely related to Zanidip (such as amlodipine, nicardipine, felodipine, or isradipine). Do not use it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not drive or use machines until you know how Zanidip affects you. Do not consume alcohol or grapefruit or grapefruit juice during treatment. Do not use Zanidip on an empty stomach; should be taken at least 15 minutes before meals, using it after meals increase its bioavailability. Do not give Zanidip to a child under the age of 18 years; it is not recommended for use in children.
Inform your doctor if you are suffering from conditions such as:
• Cardiogenic shock (when suddenly the heart does not get enough blood supply);
• Heart diseases such as angina;
• Hypotension (low blood pressure);
• Untreated congestive heart failure;
• Severe kidney problem;
• Severe liver problem.
