Zaroxolyn Information
Zaroxolyn (Metolazone) is used to treat fluid retention (edema) in people with congestive heart failure or a kidney disorder such as nephrotic syndrome. Fluid retention is a fluid buildup in the body that occurs when the body absorbs too much salt. Zaroxolyn may also be used to treat high blood pressure. Diuretics like Metolazone decrease the absorption of salt in the body and increase water excretion.
Zaroxolyn Side Effects
The most common side effects of Zaroxolyn may include dizziness, drowsiness, muscle pain, numbness, nausea, stomach pain, and appetite loss. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Chest pain;
• Easy bruising or bleeding;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, breathing difficulties, itching or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat;
• Signs of electrolyte imbalance, such as dry mouth, nausea, lack of energy, feeling restless, or weakness;
• Signs of low potassium such as constipation, leg cramps, irregular heartbeats, and increased thirst or urination
Zaroxolyn Precautions
Do not use Zaroxolyn if you are allergic to Metolazone or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have diabetes, gout, heart rhythm disorder, kidney disease, liver disease, lupus, severe liver disease, sulfa drug allergy, urination problems, think you may be pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Zaroxolyn and other medications, such as digoxin, furosemide, ibuprofen, insulin, lithium, methenamine, prednisone, warfarin, etc. Do not use Zaroxolyn if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant without informing your doctor. Metolazone can harm an unborn baby and cause side effects such as blood cell problems or jaundice in a newborn baby. Do not use Zaroxolyn while breastfeeding without talking to your doctor. Metolazone passes into breast milk and may harm a nursing infant. Do not breastfeed while using this medicine. Do not give this drug to children below 18 years without talking to your doctor.
Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Zaroxolyn comes as a tablet. Swallow the tablet whole with water once per day. You may need to limit the salt in your diet while taking this medicine. You may need frequent blood tests while using this drug. Your blood and urine may both be tested if you are dehydrated or have been vomiting. If you use Zaroxolyn to treat high blood pressure, keep using the medicine even if you feel well. High blood pressure often has no symptoms. Do not drink alcohol when using this drug. Alcohol can increase the side effects of Zaroxolyn. Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated during exercise, in hot weather, or by not drinking enough fluids. Follow your doctor's instructions about the type and amount of liquids you should drink. Metolazone can affect your alertness or coordination. Do not drive or do other activities that require alertness or coordination until you know how metolazone affects you. This drug can increase your sensitivity to light. AVoild sunlamps and tanning beds when using this drug. Use sunscreen and limit your time in the sun. Store Zaroxolyn at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
