Flovent Inhaler Information:

Flovent (Fluticasone) is a corticosteroid that is used to prevent asthma attacks, as well as to treat Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). It reduces inflammation in the lungs and airways by working to inhibit inflammatory cells, such as mast cells, neutrophils, lymphocytes, and macrophages to make breathing easier. Flovent also helps to inhibit the secretion of histamines, cytokines, and leukotrienes that are commonly released with asthma. It does this by binding to the glucocorticoid receptor, and blocking the production of inflammatory proteins AP-1 and NF-kappaB. Flovent should be used as prescribed, and is not a rescue medication and it will not treat an asthma attack that has already begun. Use the appropriate medication or seek medical attention if your symptoms worsen quickly. Do not use Flovent if you are allergic to milk proteins. Before using Flovent, tell your doctor if you have ever had a bacterial, viral, fungal, or parasitic infection, glaucoma or cataracts, tuberculosis, herpes infection of the eyes, liver disease, low bone mineral density, or a weak immune system. Long-term use of steroids may lead to bone loss, or osteoporosis. Talk with your doctor about your risk level. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant. The effects on an unborn baby are unknown, however having untreated or uncontrolled asthma during pregnancy may lead to complications.

Common side effects of using Flovent include cold symptoms, low fever, cough, wheezing, or chest tightness, hoarseness or deepened voice, white patches or sores inside your mouth or on your lips, headache, nausea, vomiting, or upset stomach. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience weakness, drowsiness, severe nausea, severe vomiting, or light-headedness, wheezing, choking, or other breathing problems after using Flovent, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain, or other vision problems, or worsening of your asthma symptoms. As well, contact your doctor if you show any signs of blood vessel inflammation, including fever, cough, stomach pain, sudden weight loss, skin rash, severe tingling and numbness, or chest pain, or if you experience sings of liver problems, including stomach pain, loss of appetite, dark urine, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes). If you experience any serious side effects or signs of an allergic reaction, seek emergency medical attention.
