Janumet (Generic names: sitagliptin and metformin HCI) contains two oral prescription medicines: sitagliptin (Januvia) and metformin hydrochloride. It is the first medicine combining a DPP-4 inhibitor with metformin in a single tablet. It is used along with diet and exercise to lower blood sugar in people with Type 2 diabetes who do not take daily insulin injections. Sitagliptin regulates the levels of insulin your body produces after eating. Metformin decreases glucose (sugar) production in the liver and absorption of glucose by the intestines.
The most common Janumet side effects are nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, gas, stomach discomfort, indigestion, stuffy or runny nose and sore throat, upper respiratory tract infection, weakness, and headache. Stop taking Janumet and call your doctor right away if you feel very weak and tired; have unusual muscle pain; have trouble breathing; have unexplained stomach or intestinal problems with nausea and vomiting or diarrhea; feel cold (especially in your arms and legs); feel dizzy or light-headed; or have a slow or irregular heartbeat. These can be symptoms of lactic acidosis, a rare but serious side effect.
You should not take Janumet if you have type 1 diabetes, renal disease or dysfunction, abnormal creatinine clearance, metabolic acidosis or diabetic ketoacidosis. Tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions, including kidney problems, liver problems, heart problems, and congestive heart failure. Tell your doctor if you have had an allergic reaction to Janumet or sitagliptin (Januvia). Do not take Janumet before receiving an injection of dye or contrast agent for an x-ray procedure. Patients over 80 years old should not take Janumet unless their kidney function is checked and determined to be normal. Janumet is not recommended for people who drink alcohol frequently or for short-term binge drinkers. It is not yet known if Janumet is safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
