Onglyza (Generic name: Saxagliptin, as Saxagliptin Hydrochloride) is a NEW, once-daily oral treatment option for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Saxagliptin belongs to a new class of diabetes medication, called DPP 4 Inhibitors (Dipeptidyl Peptidase IV inhibitors or “incretin enhancers”). DPP 4 Inhibitor improves blood pressure (glycemic) control to lower the glucose levels with type 2 diabetes. It works more effectiveness that can be used either alone or in conjunction with other diabetes medications. Onglyza is used with diet and exercise to control high blood sugar levels. In clinical trials, Onglyza did not affect most patients’ weight. Take Onglyza exactly as it was prescribed for you.
Onglyza is generally well tolerated. When Onglyza is used with other diabetes medicines, side effects may occur that include constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia), nausea, runny nose, stomach pain, urinary tract infection, and vomiting. If you are experiencing any severe side effects such as easy bruising or bleeding, urination pain, or serious allergic reaction (e.g., difficult breathing; hives; rash; swelling), please inform your doctor immediately.
Do NOT take Onglyza if you are allergic to Saxagliptin or any of the ingredients in DPP 4 inhibitors. Before taking Onglyza oral, tell your doctor if you have had any medical conditions such as congestive heart failure, low blood sugar, kidney or liver disease, trauma, and type 1 diabetes. Tell your doctor about all the prescriptions or over-the-counter (OTC) medications you use. They may interact with Onglyza drug, especially of: antibiotics, antidepressant, antifungal, blood pressure medicines, heart medicines, HIV, insulin, and other diabetes medications.
