Sensipar (cinacalcet) is a medication used to treat high parathyroid hormone levels and high calcium levels in patients with parathyroid disease. Sensipar works by increasing the sensitivity of the calcium-sensing receptor on the parathyroid gland, which is the regulator of the parathyroid levels. This reduces parathyroid hormone levels, and in turn reduces calcium levels as well. Take this medication as directed. To make sure Sensipar is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have low calcium levels, high or low blood pressure, heart disease, heart failure, or heart rhythm disorder, history of long QT syndrome, a stomach ulcer, liver or kidney disease, or seizures. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding, as it is unknown if Sensipar will harm the baby.
