Vibramycin (Doxycycline Hyclate) is a tetracycline antibiotic commonly used to treat Lyme disease, chronic prostatitis, sinusitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, acne, rosacea, and rickettsia infections, among many other bacterial infections. Vibramycin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that inhibits the synthesis of bacterial proteins by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, which is only found in bacteria. This prevents messenger RNA from adding amino acids to polypeptide chains, and new proteins from being made. Bacteria cannot grow or replicate without the proteins, which gives the immune system time to kill and remove the bacteria. Before taking Vibramycin, tell your doctor if you are allergic to doxycycline or any other tetracycline antibiotic, or if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. As well, tell your doctor about any other medications you are currently using in order to reduce the risk of interactions.
Some common side effects include lack of appetite, upset stomach or throwing up, or diarrhea. Ask your doctor about how to manage these side effects if they do not go away. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience chest pain or pressure, a fast heartbeat, change in urination, fever, chills, or sore throat, any unexplained bruising or bleeding, throat irritation, trouble swallowing, muscle or joint pain, severe dizziness or passing out, change in skin colour, swollen glands, or vaginal itching or discharge. Tell your doctor if you notice signs of a liver problem, which can include dark urine, drowsiness, stomach pain, vomiting, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), or signs of a pancreas problem, which can include severe stomach or back pain, or severe nausea or vomiting. If you experience any serious side effects or signs of an allergic reaction, seek emergency medical attention.
